| Summary |
A home movie showing playful scenes of the Staley family at the beach in their home town of Bognor Regis and in their garden in the late 1920s. The film includes some camera effects using slow and reverse motion. |
| Description |
The film opens with Winifred Staley and a friend with daughter, Pam aged five, on the beach at Bognor Regis. Pam and her mother wear swimsuits and swimming caps; beach huts and people on deckchairs are visible in the background. Pam and her mother paddle and splash each other in the sea. A group of two men and women walk towards the camera, both men wear one-piece bathing costumes. Filmed in slow motion, one of the men leapfrogs one of the women. Pam dances for the camera on the sand, plays leapfrog with her mother and paddles in a shallow pool. There is a close-up of parents, Ralph Staley and Winifred Staley talking on the beach, and further scenes of Mr Staley and Pam playing - he throws her up in the air. A brief, and rather unclear, shot of two women cooking is followed by scenes of a tea party in a garden, under the title "School Treat". Friends and family sit around tables with cake stands and tea served in a silver service. The inter-title "The Headmistress" introduces a close-up of a woman wearing a pince-nez. The inter-title "Naughty Children" presents a scene of reverse-action of a woman drinking from a glass giving the illusion of the glass filling up. The same effect is used for a man eating cake, giving the illusion of him pulling the cake out of his mouth whole. A group shot of Pam and several women, all are smartly dressed, most wearing hats, is followed by a final scene of the women fussing over a doll in a toy pram. |
